Episco-what?
A Peek into the World of Episcopalians
The Episcopal denomination comes from the beliefs and structures of the Catholic and Protestant traditions. Our foundation is compiled of scripture, tradition, and reason to build our faith as a Church and as individuals to encorporate into our lives.
We utilize scripture in our worship, including the frequently used Book of Common Prayer that purposefully uses scripture to provide a resource of devotions and teachings for all, in unity, to gather as one with Christ.
Tradition may seem 'old school,' but it brings stability in the faith journey of an Episcopalian. The purpose of our tradition is that it encourages the value of diversity to bring together different worship styles, different cultures, different roots in unity for sharing God's Love with the world.
Reason carries out the scripture and tradition of the Church into our own lives. This puts the choice in our own hands to determine how we want to practice our faith and share God's Love.
To sum it all up -- if you enter a church with red doors and there's a procession of people in robes possibly behind some person with a stick, a bunch of readings from the Bible, a long sermon, a ton of hugging, and people doing squat exercises throughout the service before eating some bread and drinking some wine, all of which is leading to an hour long snack break where you are bombarded with people introducing themselves... Chances are, you are in an Episcopal Church.
DON'T WORRY -- We are friendly. We don't bite.
